Advocacy 101 – Laying the Foundation for Effective Engagement

In today’s policy environment, understanding how to advocate for your interests is not just beneficial—it’s essential. Whether you're a business leader, industry representative, or engaged citizen, your voice matters in shaping the direction of North Dakota.

To support those who want to make a difference but may not know where to begin, GNDC is offering Advocacy 101—a concise, 45-minute session designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of effective advocacy.

This entry-level session is ideal for individuals who are new to advocacy or seeking a clearer understanding of how to get involved in the policymaking process. The content focuses on practical insight and real-world application, including:

    • Identifying key decision-makers and understanding their roles
    • Knowing when and how to engage in the policy process
    • Communicating effectively with elected officials
    • Understanding the policy cycle during both session and interim periods
    • Learning terminology

Advocacy 101 is not a legislative deep dive—it’s a foundational resource that prepares attendees to confidently participate in policy discussions that affect their business, organization, or community.

    Presenter:
Arik Spencer, President and CEO of GNDC, brings over two decades of experience in government relations, public policy, and nonprofit leadership.
