Policy Outlook: Corrections and Rehabilitation

• Colby Braun, Director of the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation 

COLBY BRAUN began his career in corrections as a correctional officer in 1997.  During his career, he has had the opportunity to be the warden at different facilities to include the women’s prison, transitional facilities and the State Penitentiary in North Dakota.  As the warden, he focused on prisoner re-entry, restrictive housing reform, and incorporating guiding principles from the Norwegian Correctional system into the operations of the North Dakota prison system.  In 2018, Colby was promoted as Director of Facility Operations for NDDOCR, working closely with the wardens, medical teams and plant services at each prison facility in North Dakota.  He was appointed by Governor Doug Burgum in January 2024 as the Director of the NDDOCR.
