• LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Our Constitution Shouldn't Change Willy-Nilly

North Dakota's Constitution belongs to all North Dakotans. It establishes the foundation of our government, protects our rights, and guides decisions that impact generations. Changing that foundation shouldn't happen willy-nilly or at the will of a narrow majority.

The Greater North Dakota Chamber supports Measure 1 because we believe constitutional changes should reflect broad public agreement. Requiring 60% approval means proposals must earn support from North Dakotans with different perspectives, priorities, and experiences.

There is value in that broader consensus. Good ideas should withstand questions, differing opinions, and thoughtful debate. If a proposal has merit, building support across those differences should strengthen it. And if significant concerns remain, shouldn't we take the time to address them before changing our state's foundational document?

This isn't about creating barriers to participation or limiting the voice of voters. It's about recognizing that decisions affecting all North Dakotans deserve more than the support of one side. At a time when political division too often drives decisions, we should encourage collaboration rather than simply gathering enough votes to win.

We recognize the tradeoff. Some proposals supported by a majority would not reach the 60% threshold. But constitutional changes deserve a higher standard than ordinary legislation because their impact extends well beyond any single election or political debate.

Our Constitution should represent the broad interests of the people it serves, not simply the priorities of those holding a majority at a particular moment.
